Davidson in the election spotlight

Tuesday’s primary election trained the national spotlight on North Carolina to see who would be the Tar Heel Democrats’ presidential preference.   Davidson was among the places visited by Associated Press photographers covering the event.  Check out the May 6 USA Today lead webpage photo of Mary Jo Clark of Davidson getting a college student registered.

Davidson Students for Barack Obama can finally take a breather now that the primary is over, which is good as it’s now exam time at Davidson College.  The Obama campaign kept the student group active for the entire school year.

“On the national side, we’ve gone on canvassing trips to South Carolina and Georgia and phone-banked several of the February and March primary states,” Michael Parsons, a senior at Davidson College, told DavidsonNews.net. “As the campaign started to approach North Carolina we took an active role in student voter registration and undecideds persuasion.”

Parsons noted that his group was involved in bringing to campus both Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius and former South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges, both Obama supporters.

“Once the voter registration deadline had passed, we mostly focused on ‘Get Out The Vote’ efforts on campus, encouraging students via fliers and e-mail to ‘Early Vote’ or vote on Primary Day,” Mr. Parsons said.

Davidson’s Obama vote

Statewide, Barack Obama won North Carolina by 14 percentage points, claiming a decisive 56 percent of the vote (as compared to 42 percent for rival Hillary Clinton) in the Democratic primary’s presidential preference race.

In Davidson’s two precincts, Obama was the 2-1 favorite over Clinton.

At Precinct 206, which votes at Town Hall and included Davidson College students, the vote was 926-377, or 71 percent favoring Obama.

In Precinct 127, which votes at Hopewell Baptist Church and includes River Run and most of the McConnell neighborhood, Obama’s lead was not as strong, though still above the state percentage.  Precinct 127 Democrats picked Obama over Clinton by a 407-272 vote, or an even 60-40 percent spread.
