Emergency workers remove a car that overturned on Griffith Street.

A car rolled over on Griffith Street around 11 a.m. Friday, coming to rest near the median strip across from the new Harris Teeter. Emergency workers at the scene said the driver was not seriously injured. They said she apparently drove up on a curb and struck a lamp post before the vehicle turned over.

Davidson Day names admissions director

Anne Buechler

Anne Buechler, a longtime teacher and school administrator, has been named director of admission at Davidson Day School, the school announced Friday. Mrs. Buechler is now a language arts teacher and sports coach at the school. She’ll start the new job at the end of the school year. (more…)

Home Economist customer appreciation day Sat.

After more than eight years in Davidson, Healthy Home Economist Market, in Sadler Square off Griffith Street, will give a little bit back to customers at its Annual Customer Appreciation celebration Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

The day includes wine tasting, food sampling, a moon bounce for children, face painting, pet adoptions, nutritional information, and more. Store vendors will offer product samples and education. “This is an excellent time to learn about natural health, sustainability, eco-living, green living, and nutrition,” the store management said in a press release.

Davidson College honored 11 retiring professors and staff Wednesday night, May 14, with a dinner for retirees, their families and friends at the Vail Commons dining hall on campus.

Woodlawn student wins C-SPAN prize

Sawyer Bowman, a ninth-grader at Woodlawn School, won a $1,000 prize and earned a visit from the C-SPAN bus (at right) for his recent documentary on Flint, Mich.

Sawyer, the son of Dwayne and Karen Bowman, spends time most summers in Flint, visiting his mother’s relatives. Watching the town slowly decline due to the shuttering of factories in the auto industry led to a class project on politics and history.

“I’d really seen Flint go down and I got curious,” Sawyer told DavidsonNews.net. (more…)

Senior Scholars to hear about shoulder pain

Davidson Senior Scholars, formed recently to present intellectual and cultural programs, will meet Wednesday, May 28, at 2 p.m. for a question-and-answer session on shoulder pain with Dr. Rodney Stanley from Northside Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Mooresville. Hooray! Graduation weekend at Davidson College is upon us and the Class of 2008 is ready to gather diplomas and march off to future adventures. A well-known Davidson resident also is ready to journey along new pathways. At one time we might have said that “Elvis has left the building” since he did appear as Elvis but for now we simply wish “The Cat in the Hat” well as he leaves library employment tomorrow and looks for a “new circus” to run. If you read a newspaper comics page on Wednesday, you may have noticed that the fame of Davidson College’s Wildcats basketball team and star Stephen Curry has reached new heights: They’re now worthy of a comic-strip punchline.
