Manager’s proposal: bonds for big needs

AT THE TOWN BOARD

Besides the public hearing on the budget, Tuesday’s meeting included (details below):

  • Recognition of planner Parviz Moosavi as Town Employee of the Year.

  • Election of a new planning board member.

  • A resolution endorsing the formation of a new regional transportation planning group.

Town Manager Leamon Brice formally presented a $7.6 million 2008-2009 budget on Tuesday that calls for a 2-cent increase in the tax rate. The modest increase would come in a year when revenue growth is expected to slow even as expenses grow, in particular for street and sidewalk repairs and a new east Davidson fire station.

But later in the meeting, Mr. Brice shifted gears and suggested an alternate approach to funding some of the town’s costliest and most pressing needs: eliminate planned borrowing in the coming year and instead consider a bond package that would be put to a vote on the November ballot.

Budget business at Tuesday board meeting

The Town of Davidson has released the proposed agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Commissioners, and at the top of the order of business is a public hearing over the proposed budget for Fiscal 2008-09. There will also be a presentation on a possible joint venture with Davidson IB Middle School to build a community center on the middle school campus. The board meeting will start at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 216 S. Main Street.

Last month, Town Manager Leamon Brice reviewed the proposed budget with the board, and said he would present a propsal for a two-cent increase in the tax rate. That would allow funding of some priorities, but also leaves out some projects that citizens and town department heads have wanted. See our April 23, 2008, article “Board wrestles with new budget.” Includes links to the draft budget as well as a summary of the board’s discussion. Read the rest of this post »

Roy G. Biv unfurls over Davidson

rainbow.JPG

Heavy rains and hail turned the skies dark over Davidson for about an hour Sunday afternoon.  The storm front brought reports of tornadoes over Lake Norman and golf-ball sized hail in Concord.  By 6 p.m., the skies began to clear over Davidson, resulting in a brief but brilliant rainbow, pictured here over Downing Street in the McConnell neighborhood.  Never heard of Mr. Roy G. Biv?  He’s the mnemonic scientists use for the sequence of hues in the visible spectrum of the rainbow: red-orange-yellow-green-blue-indigo-violet.
